Edo Vortex by Sabet

Edo Vortex started with a feeling I get every time I look at an old Japanese painting: that somebody, a long time ago, loved the same things I love. A line that says everything in one breath. A face that gives away nothing and everything. Color used like a whisper. The ladies are mine. Japanese brush, black ink, one stroke, no going back. That's how I've painted them for years. This time I let them fall into the paintings of the Edo period, the world of Hokusai and Hiroshige, and I let that world fall into them. Its patterns wrap around my lines. Its calm settles under my noise. Where the two touch, everything starts to turn. That turning is the vortex. It isn't the past being borrowed. It's the past and the present recognizing each other, the way you recognize someone you've never met and somehow already know. Two hundred and fifty years apart, the same hand, the same heart. Twenty-five of them, each one an original, each one a small window into that spin. Made slowly, meant to be loved for a long time. Signed, certified in your name.
